Orphanages vs. Family Care and the Problem of White Westerners Doing Ministry in Africa with Brent Phillips
Theology in the Raw with Preston Sprinkle
Brent leads Cherish Uganda with his wife Leah. Cherish was formally an orphanage and now functions as a spiritual formation community center using medical, education and family strengthening to reach the community we serve. In this conversation, Brent tells the story of how Cherish changed from being an orphanage to a holistic education and care center, where HIV kids and their families were being reached with the gospel. We talk about the problems of white westerners ministering in Africa, pros and cons of short term mission trips, and why family based orphan care is much better than orphanages.
Our Partnership with Cherish Uganda
The Miracle Foundation
Around the world, more organizations are moving away from institutionalization to family-based care. Cherish Uganda had a particularly challenging transition because they focus on children who are HIV-positive. Complicated medical and care considerations must be understood and evaluated for the child and the family. Cherish Uganda is doing this seemingly impossible work, reunifying dozens of children with their loved ones and giving them a brighter future. How? A big part of the answer is their use of Miracle Foundation’s Thrive Scale tool.

Brent Phillips, CEO and Programs Manager at Cherish Uganda, shares how this organization has evolved over the years to best center families within their care strategy. Brent speaks candidly and truthfully about the unique challenges of this transition, and how the posture of programming organizations is critical to the success of marginalized communities.
